History

The Hallam Tower Hotel opened in time for Sheffield to be one of the host cities of the 1966 World Cup; the tournament in which England triumphed in a never-to-be-forgotten final.

Officials and players from Switzerland, who played all three group games at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium, were some of the early guests to sample what was described as the first luxury hotel built in the north of England since World War Two.

In its heyday, the hotel’s unique combination of modernity and elegance made it the place to stay. It attracted visiting showbiz and sports stars such as pop icon David Bowie and legendary Brazilian footballer, Pelé.
